1. I love my dad, and Tom Hanks reminds me of my dad. Therefore, I love Tom Hanks, too. Transitive property?
2. Whether or not you liked Cast Away, you can't deny that the man is a phenomenal actor.
3. He keeps his personal life personal. Even though I'm not exactly pop-culturally uneducated, it doesn't mean I don't get depressed by all the vag flashings and other ridiculous publicity stunts that so many other famous people "accidentally" stumble into. Sorry, but I'm of the belief that 99% of the time, if you're all over the celebrity gossip rags, it's because you want to be. And ain't nobody changing my mind on that one.
4. He doesn't always make perfect movies, but he isn't an ass about it (like some people...*) when critics and/or fans don't agree with his choices.
5. That Thing You Do! (which he directed, wrote, and starred in). I know it's not the best movie by any stretch, but I love it anyway.
6. This was originally a 5-point list, but I recently read that Tom Hanks is endorsing Barack Obama. Awww, yeah.
* My feelings about David Cross are thus: He's hilarious in Arrested Development, but I'd be willing to bet he's a douche in real life. And I thought that before his ridiculous rant. I suppose I should also issue a warning on that link. His blog contains profanity.

Tom Hanks is great. And if Cast Away wasn't everything it ought to have been it wasn't because of him.
David Cross cracked me up as Allen Ginsberg perfect casting.
